Commander's Message - Commander

Greetings from your Commander:
Our September meeting for the
Power Squadron was held with Former Commander Rick Smitherman
at the helm since I was in Maine doing surveys, attending
a conference, sightseeing and eating my fill of Clam
Chowder and Maine Lobster. I do not know if Rick pursued
any further discussion regarding plans for a canoe trip
on the Black Water River in Milton, but if the rapid
leaf change in Maine is any indication of what is to
come, we may not have time for it before cold weather
arrives.
Our most recent dinner meeting (12 October) was
at the Black Angus. Thanks Angie for getting the head
count and making the arrangements. We had a turnout
of approximately 25. It's too bad alot of our members
are missing these informal dinner meetings where we
not only have good food but stimulating conversations.
We are looking at the possibility of having our next
dinner meeting at Ebro Greyhound Dog Track. They do
have a restaurant there, and for those of you that have
never been to a dog race it can be quite a treat. I
have checked with Ebro and the package deal is not bad:
we get a table by the window, a meal, free entrance
to the track and a "tip sheet" for $15.95
a person. It is something to consider (will be lots
of fun), so give us a headcount as soon as possible.
The Seamanship course followed by Piloting is still
in the making but again you'll need to keep checking
the Stuffing Box for time, dates and place. It is also
confirmed at our last dinner meeting that the Christmas
Party is scheduled for December 16 at Regency Towers
on Thomas Drive. As usual, bring a covered dish to contribute
to the meal. If you expect to receive a "gift"
you must bring one for someone of your gender. See you
at our next business meeting; and speaking of business,
we voted on a possible change to a new meeting date
of the 3rd Tuesday of each month with those present
consenting. Past Commander John Holmes did raise the
issue that our meeting dates are set in the by-laws
which may require a vote to make the change. I'm sure
we'll be visiting this piece of business again soon
in the near future, so think about it and be ready for
a vote later.

Last month's Squabble at the Black Angus was another
good get-together. The food and company were great.
Our annual sail on the Sea Dragon Pirate Ship was
a highlight of the year. We had 19 folks, including
Cdr Corley in full pirate regalia. The kids were entertaining.
We saw lots of dolphin. The food was super. Even the
weather cooperated. We couldn't have had a better
day.
This month, our meeting will be at the Healthplex,
at 1900, Thursday, November 9. This is our last business
meeting before the annual elections in January. This
is an important meeting, because we still need to
firm up the slate of officers for next year's Bridge.
Our rendezvous for November will be at the greyhound
track at Ebro. Details are in this month's commander's
message. Hope to see all of you there.
