Commander's Message - Commander "Ric" Corley
Ahoy from your Commander:

For those of you who missed it the Sellpoint Rendevous Easter weekend was a big success (two boats, a Sea Ray 270 & a Bertram 35) with Mary Anne Durgan, R.C. "Bud" Durgan, Rick and Angie Smitherman, Todd and Staci Doucett, and the Kerry Corleys (Senior and Junior) attending. There was an exchange of lots of good stories (laughs), plenty of food and wonderful weather. As you may already know, National Safe Boating Week is coming up May 20th to 26th, and a Safe Boating Night Class was started on April 17th and will end April 25th at Gulf Coast Community College by our own Dr. Pappas who reported six attendees. We are hoping for four new Power Squadron members our of this class.

The Squadron has a lunch cruise planned for Saturday, May 27th at 11:00 AM aboard the stern wheel excursion boat Betsy Ann leaving from the dock behind Howard Johnson's and Peddlar's Alley Lounge at 4601 West Highway 98. The cost will be $10.00 per person (normally $19.95) just bring a dish of your choice and there will be a cash bar on board. Please remember to bring a guest with you (fun). Let me or Rick Smitherman know at the next meeting or by phone if you plan to attend. The cruise is expected to last 2.5 to 3 hours.

With Spring 2006 staring us in the face and summer around the corner, now is the right time for prepareing our vessels for the upcoming boating season, doing those annual things that need to be done like the following: having vessels hauled out and checked for repairs; tuning up and servicing engines; inspecting mast, rigging, sails and winches for sail boaters; getting a courtesy safety check; buffing & waxing hulls to protect them from our summer sun; replenishing first aid kit supplies; checking (flare kits, fire extinguishers & PFD's) for any needed update service; take Safe Boating Courses if you are a new boater; and reviewing the Rules of the Road if you are an "Old Salt". Boating is a pleasure only when you are prepared.

Wishing you fair tides and a following wind,

Commander Kerry (Ric) Corley, P

To avoid the Easter Weekend crowds, we changed last month's rendezvous. Instead of meeting at Shell Island, we anchored off Shell Point. We only had two boats and seven people, but we had a truly great time. The weather was beautiful, the food good, and there were lots of funny stories to share.

Not having a boat will be no excuse for not being at the May rendezvous. Get ready for a riverboat trip! Our May rendezvous will be aboard the Riverboat Betsy Ann on Saturday, May 27, starting at 1100. The Betsy Ann is docked behind the Howard Johnson's on Highway 98, east of the Hathaway Bridge. There are signs on the highway and in the motel parking lot, so the boat is pretty easy to find. Plan to bring food, as always. You won't need to bring drinks; there is a cash bar on the boat. The cost for the adventure is $10 per person. If you plan on coming, please give me or Anji a call at 236-2117, so we can get a head count. We should have a lot of fun!

I missed last month's meeting at the Bonefish Grill, because I was working. I heard the food was good; the take-out Anji brought me was great. Unfortunately, a few orders were "messed up." We'll try to do better next time.

This month's meeting will also be a "Squabble." We'll meet at Triple J's at 1830, Thursday, May 11. I hope to see you there.

Vessel Safety Checks

Hey all boat owners;

As you saw in the January Stuffing Box, the new year is here. I have the new 2006 VSC decals and am ready to give your boat the once over if it passes, twice over if it doesn't pass the first time. Just give me a call at 914-9315. I am available almost any time.
